The Third International Cotton Genome Initiative (ICGI) Workshop
in Nanjing, People's Republic of China
June 3-6, 2002
After the success of the first International Cotton Genome Initiative
(ICGI) workshop, held at CSIRO, Canberra, Australia in 2000, and the
second ICGI workshop, held at CIRAD, Montpellier, France in 2001, the
third ICGI workshop will be held in Nanjing, the Peoples Republic of
China, on June 3 - 6, 2002 under the auspices of National Key
Laboratory of Crop Genetics and Germplasm Enhancement at Nanjing
Agricultural University.
This is a call for attendance and title
submission by March 1, 2002, and abstracts can be submitted for the
proceedings a month later. Sessions will be scheduled with five working
groups (
http://icgi.tamu.edu ) and please indicate your
most interested group to which your research will be presented. You
may also indicate your preference in making an oral presentation
or poster display. However, the organizing committee will contact
you for the final arrangements in each working group.
Abstracts of both oral and poster presentations will be included in the proceedings.
The goal of ICGI workshop is to increase
knowledge of the structure and function of the cotton genome for the
benefit of the global community, and to facilitate: (1) Global
communication, collaboration, and education; (2) Knowledge and
resource integration; (3) Technology and resource development; and
(4) Coordinated research planning.
Venue
The 2002 ICGI workshop participants will stay at the
International Conference Hotel and the workshop sessions will be held at the
National Key Laboratory, Nanjing Agricultural University in China.
The hotel room will be booked through the local organizing committee for the
participants to receive a reduced workshop rate of around $40/night.
City of Nanjing
Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province in Eastern
China. The city is situated on the vast plain of the lower reaches
of the Yangtze River and at 32° 03'N, 118° 47'E. It belongs to the
northern subtropical monsoon climate zone that is one of three cotton
research and production centers in China. The mean temperature in
June is 20° C or 68° F. Nanjing has jurisdiction of 6,516 square
kilometers and a population of about 5.2 millions.
Nanjing is very
rich in natural and artificial landscapes and one of the first 24
well-known historic and cultural cities announced by the Chinese
government. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum, the Ming Tomb, the King
Palace of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the ancient city wall of Nanjing,
the stone carvings of Southern Tang Dynasty, Pagoda for Buddist
Relics, the Tombs Southern Tan Emperors, The Rain Flower Terrace, the
Mural Painting in Tangzi Street and other places are the main scenic
spots and historic sites. The Eastern Suburbs Scenic Area, the Qixia
Mountain, the Xuanwu lake, the Mochou lake, the Qinhuai River Scenic
Belt, and other scenic areas are well-known far and near. Over
220,000 tourists from abroad visit Nanjing annually.
Travel
Air travel to Nanjing is available via either Hong Kong or Beijing. The workshop
participants may be picked up from Nanjing International Airport on Monday, June 3, 2002
if the flight schedules fit in groups. Otherwise, a printed letter in Chinese
characters will be provided in advance for the workshop participants
to catch a taxi to the conference hotel.
Visa
A valid visa from a Chinese Embassy or Consulate is required to enter
China. Dr. Tianzhen Zhang has written an invitation letter for the
prospective partcipants to initiate the paperwork for travel. However, official
travel documents from the Foreign Affairs Office for visa application will only be sent
to individuals whose completed pre-registration forms are received.
Language
English will be the official language of the Workshop.
